The Intellectual Legacy of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks
A special double-issue of TRADITION
TRADITION, together with the Rabbi Sacks Legacy, is proud to present this special volume of essays exploring he Intellectual Legacy of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks zt”l, edited by Samuel Lebens, Jeffrey Saks, and Tzvi Sinensky. The vast majority of contributors to this volume are R. Sacks’ direct disciples. We not only admired him, we often encountered him as a finished product: the Chief Rabbi of Great Britain. In time, especially after his retirement, he came to be seen by many as the “Chief Rabbi of the World”—walking alongside royalty, and, in the eyes of many, becoming a kind of royalty himself. He was summoned by prime ministers and presidents and addressed some of the most urgent moral and political questions of our age. And yet, admiration alone does not suffice. As much as we revered R. Sacks as a towering figure in Jewish and public life, this volume now engages his work more deeply, as he himself would have encouraged. He was not only a statesman of faith but a thinker whose ideas were continuously evolving. He continued to read and develop intellectually throughout his career. His teachings thus invite not only admiration but debate; they call on us to wrestle with their tensions, trace their evolution, and consider how they might be extended—or challenged—in response to today’s questions. Above all, the essays presented here continue reading R. Sacks not only with reverence, but with rigor.
